Definitions
Title – a magazine
Website – a website
Channel – a magazine, website or eNewsletter (i.e. a channel for distributing content)
Media Group – any combination of the above 3 that relate to a specific industry/topic/audience/special interest
Brands are similar to media groups but involve a commercial aspect i.e. line extensions or profit centres. A magazine can be considered a brand in itself, as can be a website. While the different elements in a Media Group may have slightly different names so are not necessarily the one ‘brand’, even though they serve the same ‘community’.
Custom publication is one that is produced by a publisher/media company, on behalf of a Company or Association (the client). The magazine (or website, or newsletter) may or may not carry advertising. It is funded either fully by the Client, or a combination of ad revenue share and direct payment to the publisher, or by the publisher taking the ad revenue in exchange for publishing the product.
Business or B2B, is a publication that is produced by a publisher to serve a specific business community or industry group. General distribution method is controlled circulation/subscription (delivered direct to target audience via mail), or a combination of newsstand and subscription/controlled circ. Main revenue model here is advertising sales but also subscription revenues with other revenue streams including product sales etc.
Specialist consumer or B2C is a publication that is produced by a publisher on a specialist topic/interest area. Distribution is via newsstand, retail and/or subscription, with revenue from sales/subscriptions and ad sales. Can include free distribution (where advertising is the only revenue stream), via addressed or unaddressed direct mail delivered by Australia Post or letterbox distribution.
General Consumer or B2C is a publication that is produced by a publisher aimed at a broad audience, usually based around consumer demographics, covering a wide range of topics and content relating to that audience demographic. Distribution is via a newsstand, retail/ supermarket and subscription, with revenue from sales/subscriptions and ad sales. Can include free distribution (where advertising is the only revenue stream).
Digital. A publication (magazine, website, eNewsletter, blog) that is produced and delivered online or via mobile/tablet devices through an application or access to the internet. This can be a digital version of a print publication, a brand extension of a print publication, or a digital only publication.
